Artist's Statement
As an artist notions of change, production and reproduction are central to my approach. This instillation, for The Edge 2011, draws upon, and reflects, my previous life as a midwife and health professional. This previous life galvanised my desire for social justice and my belief in social inclusion, and this work takes as its point of departure a number of reflections upon ideas of circularity. Whilst the life cycle is a prime aspect of this, there are a number of other cyclical elements that inform the work: focused primarily upon the elemental power of water, we see the pull of the moon and the power of the waterfall; water running literally and metaphorically through the work. The Tides that Bind culminates in a sea of stars that represent aspiration, hope, positivity and empowerment. I hope that what I have produced is something that is life affirming, recycling and up-cycling material that has been discarded and disregarded and shows both potential, and hope…
